adidas has announced they will begin using a new material in their manufacturing processes called Mylo Unleather. Created by long-time adidas founders’ Bolt Threads, Mylo is a “a high-quality alternative for animal and synthetic-based leather …[crafted from] mycelium cells grown on beds of sawdust and other organic material“. Mylo is not only organic and capable of being lab-grown, it can be tanned and embossed into all the same shades and textures as the leading animal and synthetic leather products. The material helps bridge the gap between the harsh production processes of synthetic leather and the unsustainability of animal leather. Debuting on as the upper of an all-new Stan Smith with an organic rubber midsole, Mylo will slowly find its way onto an array of adidas products moving forward.
