The Air Jordan 38 Is Inspired By MJ’s Footwork and Third Championship

Since the Air Jordan 31 debuted in 2017, fans of the most storied signature sneaker line in history have come to expect each model to be inspired by one of MJ’s original silhouettes. The Air Jordan 38 is no different, but the inspiration goes far beyond what appears aesthetically. The all-new X-Plate technology plate technology draws insights from Michael Jordan’s impeccable footwork and is a visual nod to the Air Jordan 8 straps. From a performance standpoint, court mobility and creating separation like MJ’s signature fadeaway jumper was the goal.

Aside from honoring the AJ8 straps, the X-Plate keeps the foot over the footbed during sharp movements. The X-Plate evolves the Jordan-exclusive plate technology that started with includes the Flight Plate, Eclipse Plate, and IsoPlate. For cushioning, a radial herringbone traction pattern is combined with a full-length Zoom Strobel unit and full-length Cushlon 3.0 foam.

The upper serves as a canvas for highlighting the stats MJ recorded on his way to his third championship while playing in the AJ8. 41 crosshatches on the collar represent Jordan’s 41-points-per-game average for the series and three diamonds on the medial side symbolize the Chicago franchise’s third consecutive championship.  In addition to innovating for performance, the AJ38 is also the most sustainably made Air Jordan signature shoe in Jordan Brand history, made of at least 20 percent recycled material by weight.

The Air Jordan XXXVIII releases in the Fundamental colorway on August 18 on jordan.com and at select global retailers.
