The “Lost and Found” Jordan 1 was one of the most highly anticipated sneaker releases in recent memory; so it came as a shock to many when it was revealed that pairs were being recalled by Nike due to mold forming on the sneakers’ semi-exposed padded collars. This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen Nike recall defective sneakers before a big drop, but it will certainly go down as the most infamous.

While most of the pairs that ended up in the hands of consumers seem to be void of mold, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re out of the woods if your pair looks okay right now. Mold can be difficult and unpredictable, and there’s a real possibility that incorrect storage, high humidity, or wearing the shoe in wet conditions could cause future issues with these already problematic sneakers.

Steps To Prevent Molding for Your Air Jordan 1

To avoid any issues down the line, you need to eliminate the conditions where mold can thrive; and something that mold needs to thrive is moisture. A tried and true method for maintaining and preserving sneakers while they sit in their box is Silica Gel packets. Yes, those little baggies you get when you order something online, or in a bottle of Tylenol, that say “Do Not Ingest.”

BUY: Silica Gel packets – 55 packets

These little packets contain a substance that absorbs humidity and moisture in the air around them; which is the exact thing that mold needs to grow. By tossing a couple of these Silica Gel packets in the bottom of the shoe box for your Lost and Founds, you’re essentially dehydrating the environment around the shoe, and eliminating the possibility that mold and mildew can grow.

Furthermore, Silica Gel packets are outstanding for maintaining older sneakers that you don’t want to crumble, yellow, oxidize, or disintegrate.

The best conditions for preserving sneakers is in a cold, dark, and dry place (like potatoes!), so when you grab some Silica packets to keep the mold off your Lost and Founds, toss some in with your Jordan 11’s (to slow down yellowing) and your Jordan 4’s and 4’s (to prevent premature midsole crumbling).

Sole Savy is unreal! With a busy schedule it’s hard to keep up on shoes, and the group keeps me up to date on releases, tips on how to manually cop, and a marketplace with killer deals from fellow like minded collectors. It’s changed the sneaker game for me!

@SoleSavy is the truth. They've helped me cop kicks I never would've imagined getting at retail. Members always willing to assist on drops too. And most of all, a REAL community of REAL sneakerheads. These guys should be the gold standard for sneaker communities! #LifetimeMember

My membership paid for itself three fold by being solely responsible for my union 4’s, mesh sacai waffles, sacai blazers, court purple aj1s, glow in the dark yeezy 350s, travis scott lows (which I traded to get desert ore ow’s), air max 1 londons, bc3’s for way under retail etc.

Can't say enough about SS. The stellar help with copping shoes is a given but it's the community that makes it extra special. Hands down one of the best decisions I made as a wannabe sneakerhead.

The community of sneakerheads and resources available to help manually cop are great and really will help you get more Ws. The Zoom calls for hyped drops like Union Jordan 4 only adds to the camaraderie while providing real time instruction
