Today Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand have completed the first steps in their commitment to fighting racial inequality in America through the donation of $2.5 Million across three different organizations. These organizations – the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), the Formerly Incarcerated & Convicted People and Families Movement (FICPFM), and Black Voters Matter – are the first recipients of Jordan Brand’s previously announced $100M, 10-year long commitment towards fighting systemic racism in the United States.
Of the money donated so far, $1M is being donated to the LDF, $1M to the FICPFM, and another $500,000 to Black Voters Matter. These three organizations were chosen due to their direct impact on decreasing voter suppression and helping more Black Americans and formerly incarcerated people gain access to the ballot. The LDF was founded in 1940 and is America’s leading civil rights law organization, handling famous cases such as Brown v. Board of Education which resulted at the end of segregation in the American public school system. Black Voters Matter is a Capacity-Building Institute focused on increasing registration and turnouts to voting through policy support, support for the incarcerated, and the development of grassroots organizations. The FICPFM is specifically focused on helping the formerly incarcerated meet the requirements for voter registration and providing them the support to reassimilate into society upon release.
