MSCHF’s Latest Gag Is a Sneaker You Can Wear Backwards

MSCHF BWD Backwards Sneaker

If there’s a limit to how many jokes can be squeezed out of footwear, MSCHF hasn’t found it yet.

The Brooklyn-based art collective/fashion lampooner is introducing the BWD, a sneaker that can be worn either backwards or forwards. Two openings define the oddball shoe, and there isn’t a toe box to be found. The question of how you want to wear it can be answered by just how much ankle support you want; will a mule-like opening suffice or do you need to go higher up?

Just how well the BWD stays secure to your feet from either end remains to be seen, so it’s probably best to treat it like a sandal. Essentially, two back halves of a sneaker have been mashed together to form a mountain range profile with two scant tongues facing each other at the middle. The standard low-top cut heel comes in orange suede with a Jordan 7-like midsole in speckled black taking up the majority of the profile. The lower end then begins with smooth white leather that stakes its claim on most of the upper and a shorter gum midsole more akin to a skate shoe.

MSCHF’s BWD is slated to release April 11 through its Sneakers app for a price yet to be announced. And while there’s no doubt that it’s goofy, the BWD is still significantly more practical than those Big Red Boots. Download the DROPS by SoleSavy app for updates on this drop and more.
