Nike Cracks Down on Bootlegs with Air Jordan 1 Trademark

The United States Patent and Trademark Office, the USPTO, has granted Nike a trademark over the Air Jordan 1.

The application, started in July 2020, was finally approved as the brand looks to protect its identity in the marketplace while cracking down on bootlegs. In addition to the Air Jordan 1 High trademark, the AJ1 Low and the AJ1 Low SE were also trademarked.

While bootlegs of the Air Jordan 1 have existed since the early days of the silhouette, the recent oversaturation of knockoff Air Jordan 1s at the front and center of “brands” more than likely influenced Nike’s decision to trademark the silhouette after nearly 40 years.

Nike has yet to file a cease and desist letter toward any brand or manufacturer. However, we can expect a handful to trickle down sooner rather than later.
