Nike has a special edition Dunk Low on the way. The upcoming Nike Dunk Low “Setsubun” celebrates the annual Japanese festival.
Setsubun, also referenced as the Bean-Throwing Festival, is celebrated the day before in the old Japanese calendar. During Setsubun, handfuls of dry soybeans are thrown to scare away demons, while chanting “Demons out, good luck in” to drive away evil spirits and welcome good fortune.
The upcoming Nike Dunk Low “Setsubun” features a light brown base with khaki and brown overlays. The shoe sports purple accents on the Swooshes, lining, tongue, and embroidered demon-like figure on the lateral heel. A white midsole and semi-translucent outsole land on the shoe. The insoles include special artwork from the late Edo period (the 1840s) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi titled 金時の節分. The artwork depicts a bean-throwing child hero known as Kintarō, who will grow up to be the mighty warrior Sakata Kintoki, one of the retainers of the famous demon-fighter Minamoto Yorimitsu (Raikō).
A release date for the Nike Dunk Low “Setsubun” has not been announced. However, it’s not clear as to whether or not the Dunk Low will be a Japan-exclusive. As always, our sneaker monitors and release day strategy will have members ready for drop day.
