Reebok Announces Name Change of “Kamikaze” to “Hurrikaze”

In 1994, Reebok released the Kamikaze for Seattle Supersonics’ Shawn Kemp. For the last quarter of a century-plus, the Reebok Kamikaze line has been integral to the Vector brand’s hardwood heritage.

The brand announced in fall 2021 that the Kamikaze silhouette would receive a name change with respect to the origins of the word.

Kamikaze was coined during World War II when Japanese soldiers would go on a suicide mission on fighter jets equipped with explosives.

“We have a responsibility to be accountable, learn and grow as a brand, and although we can’t change the past, we can most definitely impact change for our future,” Reebok’s VP of global apparel and executive lead for its Human Rights Award Portia Blunt said. “By making this change, we signal growth and acknowledge the impact words have on the those we serve within our diverse global sneaker community.”

According to the brand, the Reebok Hurrikaze II will roll out in the upcoming weeks.
