The Air Jordan 5 Fire Red Returns September 13th

The Iconic Air Jordan 5 OG colorway is poised for a big return this Fall.

Originally released in 1990, the Air Jordan 5 was designed by Tinker Hatfield, and took inspiration from Jordan’s biting style.
Hatfield also drew inspiration from World War II fighter planes. The iconic shark-tooth shapes on the midsole, along with the reflective material and netting, gave the sneaker a unique look that was perfectly suited to Michael Jordan’s playing style. The Air Jordan Five was meant to capture the ferocity of Michael Jordan, who at the time was becoming the best player the game of basketball had ever seen.

The Fire Red 5 was one of the original colorways of the sneaker released that year. Of course, the sneaker featured the colors of the Chicago Bulls, as required by the NBA. The beloved sneaker arrived at the cusp of Jordan’s first NBA Championship, a feat he would finally achieve the following season.

Through two renditions, the Fire Red 5 colorway has maintained its status among the most beloved of Air Jordan 5 colroways. The rendition featuring the primarily red midsole, and black tongue, is making it’s return this September.

The 35th anniversary of the Air Jordan 5 has been one for the books. The pop-culture phenomenon that is the Grape 5 made a return in June. More recently, Awake NY finally relesed their highly anticipated Air Jordan 5 collaborations, in which the Bubble Gum pair draws inspiration from the other Fire Red Air Jordan 5.

Last seen in the original form in 2013 ( a low-top rendition released in 2016), the Fire Red 5 is expected to return on September 13th via SNKRS and participating Jordan Brand retailers.
