Nike is continuing its commitment to women’s basketball and the individuals who pushed the game to new heights.
In addition to being the jersey sponsor of the W and having a handful of key athletes across the Nike, Inc. family rosters, the Swoosh recently became an official investor of the league as the umbrella company for Nike, Jordan Brand, and Converse furthers its commitment to women’s basketball.
While both Nike and the league are looking towards the future, an upcoming WNBA-themed release is looking towards the past for inspiration.
On July 30, 2002, Los Angeles Sparks sensation Lisa Leslie made history at Staples Center. The forward dunked in-game against the now-defunct Miami Sol. A few years into the league’s existence, Leslie rose to the occasion and made her mark in style.
Coming off the 25th WNBA season and upon the 20th anniversary of the legendary Dunk, Nike has something special on the way. The Swoosh is releasing a Dunk Low, inspired by Lisa Leslie’s achievement, as Complex‘s Brendan Dunne reports.
In a leaked presentation, an image of a Sparks-themed Dunk Low surfaced. The signature purple and gold hues paired with a bright teal Swoosh that takes after the Sparks’ palm trees on its logo arrive on the low-top. An embroidered 9, Leslie’s jersey number, appears on the heel.
As of now, it’s unclear whether this is a collaboration with Leslie or mere inspiration, as Dunne states. He also adds that the retail version could differ from the presented image.
Regardless, any version of a Lisa Leslie-dedicated Dunk is worth pursuing.
The Nike Women’s Dunk Low ‘Lisa Leslie’ is releasing on July 9 on SNKRS and select retailers for $130.
