Spike Lee’s 1989 film, Do The Right Thing, turns 35 this year, and its impact and message can still be felt. Nominated for multiple Academy Awards, the movie was written, directed, produced, and starred in by Spike Lee. Taking place in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, DTRT is celebrated for its exploration of racial dynamics and portrayal of New York City diversity and culture. In addition to critical acclaim and having a street named after it, the movie’s sneaker moments inspired multiple collaborations and contributed to the growth of modern-day sneaker culture. To celebrate its 35th anniversary, Spike Lee and his son Jackson continue the storied legacy of the Spizike and DTRT-inspired Jordans with a friends and family pair of Spizike Lows.
The Spizike first hit stores in 2006 as a tribute to Spike’s decades-long relationship with Jordan Brand. Its hybrid design is made up of the Air Jordan models (AJ3-6, AJ20) connected to Spike. Do The Right Thing wasn’t the only production Spike starred in during the late 1980s. He appeared alongside Michael Jordan in several iconic Nike Air Jordan commercials, most famously as his character Mars Blackmon. The special edition Spizike Low comes in a Black, White, Coconut, Fire Red, and Pine Green colorway inspired by Sal’s Pizzeria, the center location of the film.
The DTRT 35 Spizike Low is limited to 100 pairs and comes in special Sal’s Pizza box packaging. Details on the sneaker include numbering on the lateral side of the lining, “LOVE-HATE” text on the insoles, a woven “DTRT 35” label stitched under the eyestay overlay, and a 1989 lace dubrae. Spike’s logos appear on the heels and Air Jordan 6-inspired lace pocket. Jackson Lee notes, “The Jordan Spizike weaves together elements from multiple Air Jordans. Much like Do The Right Thing, it interlaces various social issues, creating a rich tapestry that reflects the vibrant spirit of the 1989 film.”
Spike Lee, 40 Acres and a Mule, Jordan Brand, and Snipes are celebrating the anniversary with a pop-up shop on Saturday, June 29th, in Brooklyn. The pop-up will feature Jordan and 40 Acres merchandise, customization, pizza, music, art, and more. The anniversary celebration will continue on Sunday with a free block party on Do The Right Thing Way in Brooklyn. The DTRT 35 Spizike Low will not be available for retail. To kick off the celebration, we will give away pairs via scavenger hunt and in our app.
