Nike Reportedly Unlikely to Continue Kyrie Irving’s Signature Shoe

Nike is “unlikely to extend” Kyrie Irving’s signature shoe line, according to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne.

Since 2014, the guard has been a focal point for Nike Basketball’s core line of signature athletes. However, the Swoosh looks to pivot on the guard and his popular signature shoe line.

The news is the latest development in the recent Nike and Kyrie Irving saga as the lead-up to the recently released Nike Kyrie 8 (Infinity) was met with pushback from the Brooklyn Nets guard before the 2021-2022 season began.

“I have nothing to do with the design or marketing of the upcoming Nike Kyrie 8, IMO these are trash,” Irving said in an Instagram comment on July 28, 2021. The Nets player followed up on August 3, clarifying his comment and reaffirming his commitment to making sure that he and Nike were continuing to “building something great.”

According to sources, Irving’s displeasure with his signature shoe is part of a larger contract issue with Nike.

“We don’t comment on contracts or rumors or speculation. Kyrie remains a Nike athlete,” a spokesperson told ESPN.

Irving’s ninth signature shoe is expected to release this fall. However, his role as a Nike signature athlete is unclear as the deal expires after the upcoming 2022-2023 season.
