SoleSavy COLLECTions – Sean Owen

This week on SoleSavy Collections, we are joined by another OG member of the community. Sean Owen is a Motion Capture Animator and has been an avid Dunk SB collector since the early 00’s. His knowledge and taste in sneakers is only rivalled by his copping skills, and we’re ecstatic to have him as a member.

How long have you been collecting sneakers?

Since back in the early 00s. Used to be a big skater, so was into primarily chunky skate shoes of the era and of course SBs

How many pairs do you currently have in your closet?

Around 200

What is the oldest sneaker in your collection?

I have the Jedi SB Dunk Lows from 2004 (but I threw out the box when I moved to Toronto… pain)

What’s the sneaker that got you hooked?

It has to be the Dunk. It was huge for me in the early-mid 00s and the main reason I got back into shoes again in 2018.

What’s your biggest steal or retail cop?

The biggest steal I got were these CDG x Nike Air Mowabbs. I got the last size from a local store for 50% off. CPFM Dunks might still be my best retail cop.

What’s “the one that got away” for you?

Seems kind of bait, but it’s the Off White Black Presto. This was right before I joined SoleSavy, and I was only doing in-store raffles. If only I had been a member back then…

What are five sneakers every person should have?

A Dunk (hopefully a low SB, but doesn’t matter), Jordan 1, MiUSA New Balance, something with Boost, and some kind of Air Max.

What’s a sneaker in your collection that always gets looks/compliments when you wear them?

Definitely the Pine Green 1.0 Air Jordan 1s

Most memorable sneaker trade?

Another hindsight story, but I traded a pair of Purple Lobsters I got free (Nike screw-up) for Nigel AJ1s, which seemed like a great deal, but I think we all know who got the better end of that trade. However, I did have multiple Lobsters, so I’m definitely not feeling too bad over it, and the Nigels are one of my most worn pairs to this day.

Do you prefer quantity or quality in your collection, and why?

At first, it was quantity, as I’d basically trashed my entire collection around 2010, so needed to build it back up. As the covid purchases went crazy, I’m now re-evaluating this stance and will shortly switch to quality. Most of the time, I wear New Balances these days and care more about proper comfort and orthopedic functionality. Also, I prefer collecting pants these days, it seems, over shoes.

What pairs do you have for sale or trade right now?

I’m looking to trade my Skepta x Nike Air Max Deluxe. They’re up on COLLECT.

What pairs are you currently watching / what will be your next pick-up?

I want to double-up on Taxi AJ1s as I’ve been waiting for those to drop since they were first leaked. Otherwise, I’m trying to stay more pragmatic with the shoe cops these days as I’m running out of apartment space.

How do you think the sneaker game has changed since you started collecting?

It’s definitely spread to a much wider audience, which I think is great despite some of the frustrations people feel these days.

What is your biggest frustration with sneakers as a whole right now?

The fact there is so much coming out week to week. I’d love to cop everything, but unfortunately, city living space dictates otherwise.

Brand rapid-fire – What is your favorite Nike, adidas, Jordan, New Balance model?

Nike Dunk SB, adidas YZY Waverunner, Jordan 1, New Balance 990v2
