Tobey McIntosh and his Crenshaw Skate Club label are merging skate & hoops through a one-of-a-kind design. In partnership with Jordan Brand, McIntosh has designed his own promotional PE, utilizing the Air Jordan 36 Low.
“The alignment of Crenshaw Skate Club and a basketball sneaker may seem odd,” McIntosh said. “But, Jordan to me is so much more than basketball. Even if you are not familiar with basketball, when you hear the name Micheal Jordan you think of Excellence. That name goes beyond basketball, it can be used as an adjective to describe someone in the highest level of a certain field. You can be the Micheal Jordan of skateboarding, The Micheal Jordan of Engineering, etc. Being able to be aligned with such greatness is surreal.”
The Crenshaw Skate Club x Air Jordan 36 Low “Tobey” PE, which will only release via friends & family, draws from McIntosh’s upbringing and the importance of Black skaters within the skate industry. The “Tobey” PE features a textured set of medial and lateral panels dipped in brown, inspired by the apartment buildings he grew up in. The pair includes a quote that has resonated with him since his childhood: “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”
“What I strive to do is show all kids that look like me, that they can be Micheal Jordan in whatever they decide to do,” he adds. “Being able to work on this shoe shows that you can accomplish anything you truly set your mind to. A kid from Crenshaw can design his own Jordan shoe. And this project represents just that.”
