Last year, Nike celebrated the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the MLB’s color barrier by releasing a commemorative Dunk Low. The celebration won’t be limited to the diamond anniversary, though, as Nike is gearing up to release an Air Force 1 Low in honor of #42.
A more muted color scheme decorates the AF1, but there are still an abundance of details pulled from Robinson’s career to appreciate. Bronze lace dubraes commemorate both the year he broke the color barrier (1947) and the year Robinson retired (1956). Robinson’s #42 is embroidered on the heel next to two red baseball stitches, while the Brooklyn Dodgers’ logo is appears on the tongue. On the laces you’ll find the message, “Change the World,” and the speckled gum sole is reminiscent of a baseball diamond’s dirt.
The Air Force 1’s upper channels the Dodgers’ colors with Blue canvas used for the Swoosh, mustache, and tongue. Grey pebbled leather then appears on the toe box, mid-panel, and heel atop a smooth white leather base.
Release details have yet to be confirmed, but the Robinson Air Force is expected to drop in April. Last year’s Dunk release was delayed, but hopefully this year Nike will be able to align the launch with the MLB’s annual Jackie Robinson Day on April 15.
