The Nike Air Max Penny 1 is one of the most revered sneakers of all time. It has a myriad of iconic legacy colorways alongside new collaborations like the Recess collection with Social Status. As the sneaker continues to see a rise in popularity, the Penny and the Swoosh are headed back to Penny’s roots. The current head coach of the University of Memphis Tigers earned his stripes as a member of the then-Memphis State basketball team from 1990-1993 before opting to head to the NBA Draft before his senior season. In 1994, the year after he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors and traded to the Orlando Magic, the Tigers retired his #25 jersey.
Now, in honor of his alma mater, the Nike Air Max Penny 1 is getting a tiger-themed spin. The colorway is reminiscent of the Orlando colorway and includes a mix of leather and mesh. Tiger print suede appears on the side panel above the mudguard and near the eyelets. The jeweled Swoosh on the lateral side, Penny’s One Cent logo on the heel, and a white rubber outsole complete the look.
The Nike Air Max Penny 1 “Tiger Stripes” is set to release on February 2 via Nike with a retail price set at $190.
