IT’S TIME! Nike’s newest signature athlete is the one and only Joey Wheeler.

Domino High School’s bravest is the focal point behind this monumental collaboration between KONAMI and Nike. And he is the perfect voice to channel .SWOOSH’s call for community.

But Why? Because, as far as Seto Kaiba was concerned, Joey was simply a “third-rate duelist with a fourth-rate deck.”

He wasn’t the favorite to win the Duelist Kingdom. Heck, he didn’t even possess the power of a millennium item. What he did posses, though, was the strong support of his friends. And a massive chip on his shoulder- driven by the selfless goal of winning the tournament to secure the funds for a surgery that would restore Serenity’s, his younger sister, eye sight.

That chip on his shoulder, and the strong support system behind him, lead Joey all the way to the finals of the Duelist Kingdom Tournament.

Joey Wheeler was a hero to kids around the world who were engrained in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh!. It didn’t matter that he didn’t know the game to the degree in which Yugi or Kaiba did. It didn’t matter that he dealt with family trauma at an early age. Because Joey showed us that with passion, with love, and with a strong support system you could achieve your goals. Simply put- Joey showed impressionable children that you didn’t have to be the strongest or the smartest to win at something. Joey Wheeler helped breathe confidence into many kids turning young adults.

Of course, every Nike athlete has a signature sneaker, and the Air Muscle was Joey Wheelers. The Air Muscle featured all of the signature touches of the beloved Air Max 95, down to the vibrant Neon Air bubbles. The shades of blue that dressed the upper perfectly complemented Joey’s blue uniform, and created an ultimate “what if” sneaker for Air Max fans. That “What if” is coming to life, and the timing could not be more perfect.

As part of Nike’s 30th anniversary celebration of the Air Max 95, the ever-so-creative team behind .SWOOSH have teamed up with KONAMI to bring Joey Wheeler’s Air Muscles to life. And if we have learned anything from .SWOOSH this year- it’s that they go all out when it comes to telling a story.

No details are spared here, as the Air Max 95 is redesigned in order to match the versions depicted in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga. The traditional four gradient panels on the side of the Air Max 95 are replaced with three panels. The collaboration’s version of the Air Max 95 features five lace loops- rather than the usual six. The .SWOOSH team even went as far as blacking out the front air bubble- to better represent the look of the sneaker in the series. These aesthetic changes were all made with the idea of truly bringing the Air Muscle to life.

.SWOOSH’s collaboration with KONAMI will release in two colorways. The blue pair, dubbed the “Joey” colorway, is the pair expected to release globally. Meanwhile, a gray-scale version of the sneaker, dubbed the “Jonouchi”, which pays homage to the Air Muscle that first appeared in the mange pages of the beloved series, will release exclusively in Japan.

Both sneakers come in exclusive packaging that includes custom, playable, Nike x Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Cards, marking the first time a brand has joined KONAMI to co-create official Trading Card Game cards that can be featured within the dueling game. Matching apparel, including a Nike Destroyer Varsity Jacket that features a Domino High School varsity patch, is expected to launch with the collection as well.

Channeling their inner Pegasus .SWOOSH has another massive surprise up their sleeve, though.

In order to better honor the legacy of this beloved series, and what it means to both sneaker heads and popular culture, the original voice actors for the English and Japanese versions of the anime reprise their roles as Joey and Jonouchi. In the video, shared below, Wayne Grayson, Joey’s original English voice actor, shows off the packaging of the Nike Air Max 95 QS YGO “Joey”- including the special box, the playable card, and even the Red Eyes Black Dragon insoles. A version with with Nike Air Max 95 QS YGO “Jonouchi” was also released by Nike Japan featuring the original voice actor.

.SWOOSH is no stranger to accurately and respectfully paying tributes to important parts of popular culture. Though more typically these expressions of love have been through video games, this time the world of Yu-Gi-Oh! rightfully gets the love it has earned. This collection takes that effort to a whole other level- showing us that it is possible to bring what seems so far out to life. Furthermore, the way it treats the series with the love a franchise the likes of Yu-Gi-Oh! deserves should put a smile on the face of anime and sneaker fans.

Joey Wheeler was the embodiment of an underdog. At a time where the world of anime began to boom globally, Joey gave us someone to stand behind. His friends, including Yugi, Téa, and Tristan, showed us what it meant to have a support system- an important lesson for young fans in their formative years. Way before Vin Diesel taught us the importance of supporting your family, Joey and his friends taught us to believe in the heart of the cards.

.SWOOSH has spent 2025 rolling out projects that interconnect sneakers with things like long forgotten video game modes, April Fools jokes, and even regulating your emotions. This project with KONAMI, though, is the culmination of the label’s hard work. And it once again shows us that the minds behind their projects are the sharpest in the industry. And the soul behind said projects would have Maximillion Pegasus foaming at the mouth.

The Nike Air Max 95 QS YGO and complementary apparel will be available globally in the “Joey” colorway September 12 at SNKRS and select Nike retail partners. The Japan-exclusive “Jonouchi” colorway and apparel will be available September 12 at select Japanese retail locations.

Sole Savy is unreal! With a busy schedule it’s hard to keep up on shoes, and the group keeps me up to date on releases, tips on how to manually cop, and a marketplace with killer deals from fellow like minded collectors. It’s changed the sneaker game for me!

@SoleSavy is the truth. They've helped me cop kicks I never would've imagined getting at retail. Members always willing to assist on drops too. And most of all, a REAL community of REAL sneakerheads. These guys should be the gold standard for sneaker communities! #LifetimeMember

My membership paid for itself three fold by being solely responsible for my union 4’s, mesh sacai waffles, sacai blazers, court purple aj1s, glow in the dark yeezy 350s, travis scott lows (which I traded to get desert ore ow’s), air max 1 londons, bc3’s for way under retail etc.

Can't say enough about SS. The stellar help with copping shoes is a given but it's the community that makes it extra special. Hands down one of the best decisions I made as a wannabe sneakerhead.

The community of sneakerheads and resources available to help manually cop are great and really will help you get more Ws. The Zoom calls for hyped drops like Union Jordan 4 only adds to the camaraderie while providing real time instruction
