Even the greatest of all time was superstitious.
The relationship between sports fans and their teams are as strong as they come. Our feelings are so invested that we go as far as turning our hats inside out in hopes it starts a rally for our team. Yes, superstitious can be a little silly, but they are a quintessential part of sports fandom. They allow us to feel as if we, too, are helping contribute to our team’s success.
Fans are not the only ones who are superstitious, though. For generations, we have heard stories about athletes and the rituals they believe contributed to their success. It could a star player growing out his beard when their team goes on a playoff run. It could also be your favorite tennis player wearing the same pair of socks during her dominant tournament run.
Perhaps most famously, though, it could be the greatest NBA player of all time wearing the same shorts every game.
Throughout his NBA career, Michael Jordan famously wore his UNC practice shorts during games. Even when Jordan returned to the game in 2001, the ritual remained. This ritual by Jordan not only helped him feel better prepared, but it also became part of the lore of his legacy. The shorts were referenced in Space Jam. They were even partially credited for the change to baggy shorts in the NBA. No matter how silly the ritual may have seemed, it was truly hard to argue wether or not a six-time NBA champion was committing to the bit too hard.
This month, Jordan Brand will celebrate the legend behind the superstition.
The Air Jordan 3 Lucky Shorts feature full-grain leather in Summit White. The shoe features mixes of Photon Dust suede and Legend and Hydrogen Blue accents to pay homage to the legendary shorts. The sneakers will also feature a hidden detail within the tongue- a reference to a care tag that can be found on clothing. In this case, a pair of blue shorts that must have seen its fair-share of washing machines.
The Air Jordan 3 Lucky Shorts will launch via SNKRS on February 22nd.
