Kanye West and his YEEZY label continue to make headlines.
Walmart has filed a notice of opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office over similar logos, as originally reported by Fashion Law. The YEEZY logo, trademarked in early 2020, is likely to confuse the marketplace as the Walmart logo and West’s dotted “sun ray logo” strike similarities.
The logo was set to be used for clothing, a retail store, musical sound recordings, streaming, hotel services, the construction of “non-metal modular homes,” and much more as the YEEZY empire continues to grow, according to the original trademark application.
According to official documents, the YEEZY logo is composed of “eight dotted lines, each comprising three totally shaded circles, with a total of 24 circles, arranged at equal angles as rays from a sun.”
Walmart, however, argues that the logo in question “is likely to cause confusion, mistake, and deception as to the source or origin of Applicant’s [YEEZY] goods and services and potentially create a false affiliation with Opposer’s [Walmart] Mark which will injure and damage Opposer and the goodwill contained within Opposer’s Mark.”
Walmart’s logo has been in use since 2007.
