Just when you thought sneakers couldn’t become more mainstream and embedded in pop culture, Disney’s latest announcement for its upcoming film adds to sneakers’ mass-appeal dominance.
Disney announced its latest Disney Original film with Sneakerella, a modern adaptation of Cinderella. The film, premiering in February 2022, takes the fairytale classic and places it in the heart of New York’s sneaker culture.
El, the protagonist, is an aspiring sneaker designer from Queens who works in the shoe store that once belonged to his late mother. El hides his artistic talent from his stressed-out stepfather and two mean-spirited stepbrothers. He then meets Kira King, the daughter of the famed basketball star and sneaker legend Darius King. They both fall in love through their shared passion for sneakers. The film follows El’s journey into making it in the sneaker industry.
