It looks like Louis Vuitton has found its newest Creative Director. After the tragic loss of Virgil Abloh in late 2021, LV is appointing fellow fashion icon Pharrell Williams as menswear creative director. The role is actually a different title from the “artistic director” role Abloh wore in his time with Louis Vuitton. The announcement was made in famed French newspaper Le Figaro before Louis Vuitton made the announcement itself later that day on February 14. Ahead of the big reveal, Pharrell cleaned his Instagram page, signaling a big announcement.
Pharrell’s initial collection will debut in June 2023, hinting that this has been in the works for some time as these collections take quite some time to assemble. In honor of Virgil’s passing, LV spent 2022 without a creative director and instead opted to do a series of tributes to the late artistic director alongside collections designed by the current team. This isn’t Pharrell’s first go in the world of fashion. He is responsible for iconic streetwear brands Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream and frequently works in tandem with adidas alongside his Humanrace brand. How this new role will impact his work with the Three Stripes is currently unknown.
