Nike’s Cult Classic series continues this month with the return of the iconic Air Tech Challenge 2 “Racer Pink”. The Air Tech Challenge 2 is held in high regards amongst sneaker heads. After the successful launch of the “Hot Lava” colorway, its no surprise to see another coveted colorway return.

But how did this sneaker become such an important part of Nike’s legacy?

The Design that Captured Generations

The Air Tech Challenge 2 was designed by the incomparable Tinker Hatfield. The legendary designer tapped into Agassi’s rebellious spirit with the pinkish red hot lava that has given this shoe its fame. The sneaker was at the top of the performance capabilities of 1990, and were the first sneakers Agassi wore that featured a visible Air Sole unit. Since originally releasing in late 1989, the sneaker has retroed four times. This 2024 retro will be the fifth time this iconic shoe makes a return.

A Flashy Sneaker and a Breakout Season

In 1990, whilst wearing the Air Tech Challenge 2, Andre Agassi cemented his breakout season. He reached his first Grand Slam final, ultimately losing the final of the French Open in June. He quickly followed that up making the finals of the US Open to Pete Sampras. Despite losing both, Agassi established himself as a namesake in the sport.

A Legacy Established and Well Respected

The Air Yeezy 2 borrows from the Air Tech Challenge. Kanye West’s love for the Air Tech Challenge 2 is no secret. The now iconic Air Yeezy 2 features many nods to other iconic Nike sneakers. Perhaps the most prolific one being the outsole from the Air Tech Challenge. A leaked prototype of the Air Yeezy 2 features even more Agassi nods throughout, though they ultimately remained on the cutting room floor.

Celebrating the Legacy in a New Way

The Air Tech Challenge 2, especially the Hot Lava pair, are no stranger to a retro. In fact, last years’s colorway was only five years after their previous rerelease. This Racer Pink colorway, though, is a different story. Though part of the original release in 1990, this colorway was exclusive to women’s sizes. This 2025 retro will be the first time the racer pink is available in men’s sizing. I decision I am certain will be welcomed by our big footers.

Though pairs have been trickling in via boutiques, the official release from Nike is still coming. The Racer Pink Air Tech Challenge 2 releases via SNKRS on January 31st.

Sole Savy is unreal! With a busy schedule it’s hard to keep up on shoes, and the group keeps me up to date on releases, tips on how to manually cop, and a marketplace with killer deals from fellow like minded collectors. It’s changed the sneaker game for me!

@SoleSavy is the truth. They've helped me cop kicks I never would've imagined getting at retail. Members always willing to assist on drops too. And most of all, a REAL community of REAL sneakerheads. These guys should be the gold standard for sneaker communities! #LifetimeMember

My membership paid for itself three fold by being solely responsible for my union 4’s, mesh sacai waffles, sacai blazers, court purple aj1s, glow in the dark yeezy 350s, travis scott lows (which I traded to get desert ore ow’s), air max 1 londons, bc3’s for way under retail etc.

Can't say enough about SS. The stellar help with copping shoes is a given but it's the community that makes it extra special. Hands down one of the best decisions I made as a wannabe sneakerhead.

The community of sneakerheads and resources available to help manually cop are great and really will help you get more Ws. The Zoom calls for hyped drops like Union Jordan 4 only adds to the camaraderie while providing real time instruction
