Enes Kanter is using his platform and his sneakers to raise awareness of China’s treatment of its Uyghur ethnic minority. Kanter has worn a graphic custom of an Air Jordan 11 Low and other shoes with messages relaying his cause towards what’s going on in China. Kanter’s Instagram and Twitter posts used the hashtags #HypocriteNike and #EndUyghurForcedLabor.
Kanter has spoken about the topic, but the Celtics player has recently name-dropped Nike, Phil Knight, and LeBron James. Kanter is urging Nike to end slave labor in China by inviting Phil Knight, LeBron James, and Michael Jordan to fly to China to look at the “modern-day slavery” taking place at the camps.
According to the US State Department, nearly two million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities have been detained in internment camps in Xinjiang since 2017.
The messages from Kanter add to the NBA-China relationship that has been in the global spotlight with Daryl Morey and LeBron James. China also serves as a vast market for the NBA and Nike Inc.
