Today kicks off the beginning of Black History Month and with it, New Balance has already revealed a celebratory collection and set of charitable initiatives. Releasing February 15th, the New Balance “My Story Matters” collection which focuses on special edition 990v5 and 574 silhouettes was created by an all-Black team of New Balance designers. Each of the shoes inspired by the purple robes of Gospel choir members. Chavon Cham, New Balance’s Senior Product Manager for Lifestyle Apparel stated the following regarding the collection:
“This Black History Month takes on a new meaning and importance in light of the events of this past year… We wanted to create a collection that celebrates the power of Black stories, both in name and design. ‘My Story Matters’ drives home the core truth that every Black story has value and deserves a chance to be heard.”
Coinciding with the collection, New Balance athlete Kawhi Leonard will also be donating 12,000 pairs of his signature sneakers to Soles4Souls while the brand themselves will be supporting 15 scholarships as part of the Black Talent in Design & Fashion Fund.
