Despite the collections’ popularity over the last two years, rumors are circulated that Nike has decided to end their partnership with Jerry Lorenzo and his Fear of God brand. The Nike Air Fear of God 1 ‘String’ colorway is tentatively cancelled as well.
This news comes fresh of the coattails of Lorenzo’s recent self-financed ad campaign for the FoG 1 ‘String’ which prominently featured photos and references to competitor Reebok’s ‘The Question’ sneaker.
Reebok is owned and operated by adidas, Nike’s largest competitor.
While behind the scenes infighting and logistics are sure to have some part in this decision, the free advertising Lorenzo gave to Reebok/adidas through his Iverson campaign may have been the final straw factor in Nike’s decision.
Lorenzo has commented on his Nike deal’s impermanence in the past. With online fashion marketplace Seam, Lorenzo once stated : “I don’t have a deal for a Fear of God II, I’m living in question — I’m so humbled by everything that Nike has done for me, but I have no peace of mind about it. I don’t know if they’re bringing me back, so I’m living in questions.”
